Boom Bay Vol. Fire Department Takes Delivery of New Rescue Airboat

The Boom Bay Volunteer Fire Department, Larsen, Wisconsin announces the delivery of an 18-foot Search and Rescue (SAR) airboat.

The SAR airboat, built by Alumitech, Inc. in Orlando, Florida, is an 18’ x 8’ aluminum hull airboat specifically designed for search and rescue operations. Built from Alumitech’s standard AGI A-model, the SAR airboat was beefed up for winter and prolonged ice operation, with half-inch polymer covering the hull bottom and sides and increased hull framing. The airboat is powered by a GM 496 cu. in, 425 hp, fuel injection engine, capable of running on 87 octane unleaded fuel, a 2.3:1 ratio belt-drive gear reduction unit and a 3-blade Sensenich composite propeller.

Alumitech’s unique SAR airboat hull design affords a 5-person crew seating capacity, while providing maximum equipment storage capability. The enclosed hull/walk around deck provides a stable work platform for divers, as well as, a secure patient treatment area. The vessel’s total carrying capacity is 8-10 adults or a 3,200 total pound load capacity.

Also, included in the hull’s design are watertight storage compartments adequate for the storage of thermal imaging cameras, AED/Defibrillators and other electronic equipment.

The SAR airboat is equipped with a full illumination package that features dual 600,000 candlepower remote control search lights, running lights, scene floodlights and red strobe emergency warning lights, all powered off the vessel’s 90 amp alternator.

The Boom Bay Volunteer Fire Department was able to purchase their new search and rescue airboat as a result of two private grants, totaling $15,000, received from the John J. and Ethel D. Keller Fund and the Lynne F. Keller Fund, within the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region, Inc. The remaining balance was earned through Fire Department fundraisers and other smaller financial contributions from the community.

“The addition of Alumitech’s SAR airboat will be a great asset to the Boom Bay Fire Department’s equipment fleet.’ ‘It will greatly enhance our water and ice rescue capabilities, while reducing the risks to our rescue personnel,” said Ken Kronshnabel, with the Boom Bay Fire Department and responsible for the procurement of the rescue boat. According to Fire Chief Robert Tellock, “The airboat is a great piece of rescue equipment. We are proud to have it.”
